Salto de Laja to Pucón
On our 500 km ride on Ruta 5, we discover a Bavarian restaurant next to the motorway. We eat bratwurst with sauerkraut and listen to German folk music - it is something special so far from home!
We spend the night near Chile’s largest waterfall Salto del Laja, where a 10 minutes walk takes us right up to the 35 m high falls.
Our next destination is the Suizandina Lodge in Malalcahuello at the northernmost end of Patagonia, nestled near the Conguillio National Park with the Llaima volcano, and close to the Malalcahuello nature reserve with the Lonquimay volcano. During our 4 hours hike we don't even know where to look first: volcanoes, lupine fields and - as a highlight - giant Chilean araucaria trees, one of the oldest trees in the world!
Driving to Lago Conguillío in the Parque National Conquillío is really adventurous. A steep and bad road demands everything from the 4x4 motorhome and the driver. But it's worth it! We are allowed to stay overnight right on the shore of the lake with a direct view to the volcano Llaima (3,145 m) and the Sierra Nevada. The park was primarily set up to protect the araucaria, of which there are thousands - ancient and huge!
We spend 7 days in Pucón area - we really like it here and we really have the feeling of being in Switzerland! Many of the city's buildings are made of wood, everything is well maintained, flowers are everywhere and there is even a huge Christmas tree. So we are finally in the mood to write our Christmas mail.
Volcano areas are usually full of thermal springs - like the Pucón area with its Villarrica volcano. We will not miss to take a long bath in the natural hot springs of Los Pozones, they allow to park our motorhome overnight on their parking lot.
We will never forget the next day adventure. We only wanted to do a sightseeing flight to the Villarrica volcano!

But there is only an old 4-seater Cessna available with no seats and no door, because it is modified to transport only parachutists. There is no way out. If we want to see the caldera of the volcano, we have to squeeze into the little plane with 4 other parachutists. We get an automatic parachute, just in case!!!

It gets really scary after the 4 parachutists jump off, just the two of us and a big open door and no safety belt. We are richly rewarded - the view into the volcano is terrific!

We survive and can enjoy Christmas with seven other Overlander’s at our campsite in Pucón.

From Pucón to Patagonia

We have a lot to talk during these days in Pucon, most of our camper colleagues came from the South and we can learn a lot from them. But after 3 days over Christmas it is time to say good bye. We continue south and decide spontaneously to stop at Entre Lagos at a campsite directly on the shore of Lake Puyehue.

The next day we head for the most famous volcano in Chile - Osorno (2.652m), to us the most beautiful round shaped volcano we have seen so far. It is one of the 2.085 volcanos in Chile, of which 55 should be still active. Heavy rain forces us to stop in Ensenada, a small village at Lake Llanquihue, which is also called the “German lake”, because from 1852 many Germans settled here.

Beautiful sunshine on the next day allows us to make a day-cruise from Petrohué to Peulla.

We enjoy the gorgeous mountain panorama including the back-side view on volcano Osorno.

The night we spend half-way up the volcano, where a huge parking area at the chairlift station (1200m) allows a quiet night and an impressive sunset.

To visit Frutillar is a must for Germans, if it is just to enjoy a black forest cake in one of the “Kuchen” shops. The reason is, that in the middle of the 19th century many Germans settled in this region. Some German words have been incorporated into the Chilean language like el Kuchen (cake), el Strudel and really funny el Otto = the typical German!

The following day demands our full flexibility. I just wanted to pay my reserved ferry ticket in Puerto Montt for Jan 2nd. But we were told, no ferry on this day due to problems in the harbour of Quellon, the only ferry with vacancies is at 11pm to Chaitén. Just enough time explore the old harbour Angelmó. The highlight are a bunch of sea lions hanging around behind the restaurants and waiting for food. You cannot get closer to them.

The boat rolls us to sleep that night in our camper and 10 hours later we are in Patagonia!
