From Puerto Montt to Patagonia
After a 10 hour ferry ride we land in Patagonia, the Chilean Norway.
Sunshine and a beautiful nature - what more do we want at the end of 2019?
The Carretera Austral in southern Chile was cut through the wilderness from the 1970s - leads 1,200 km through a beautiful landscape. It is Chile's "most beautiful road to loneliness". The route is partly in a poor condition, gravel road with many potholes, sometimes very narrow with many switchbacks and gradients, but meanwhile longer sections have been paved over the last 5 years.
With the weather we are super lucky - no rain, instead bright blue sky and even 30 degrees in one day - incréible!
We follow the Carretera Austral south through the valley of the Rio Simpson. At Portezuelo Ibañez the road rises to 1,100 m - the fog drops the visibility close to zero. However, the violent wind - so typical in Patagonia - makes clouds and fog disappear within minutes and when we arrive in the small town of Cerro Castillo we can admire the bizarre rocks in the Cerro Castillo massif.
After 120 km we reach the Lago General Carretera and are overwhelmed by its bright turquoise color in front of the panorama of the southern Andes. With 2,240 km², the lake is the largest lake in Chile and the second largest in South America.
An absolute must: a boat trip from Puerto Río Tranquilo to the Capillas de Mármol. These “marble chapels” are extraordinary rock formations with rock caves made of bright, multi-core marble. We drive straight into the caves - an impressive experience!
The next day we master our last 258 km on the bumpy and rumpled Carretera Austral. But the grandiose landscape makes up for the exhausting journey! After 5 hours driving we reach Chile Chico, the border town to Argentina. The next day we cross the Argentinian border in record time of less than 45 minutes.
